Step 1: Use the small bag to put a rock inside and tie the rope with a simple knot.
Step 2: Choose your tree and branch more than 100 metres (330 ft) from your campsite. The branch must be at least 2 metres (6.5 ft) long and at least 5 metres (16 ft) from the ground. Both branch and tree must be solid.
Step 3: Throw the small bag over the chosen branch.
Step 4: Pass the rope through to recover both ends.
Step 5: Tie the carabiner with a sturdy knot and pass it through the bear bag loop.
Step 6: Pass the second end of the rope through the carabiner.
Step 7: Reassemble the bear bag at the top of the branch.
Step 8: Tie a 20 cm (7.5 in) piece of wood horizontally to your rope at a height of 2 metres (6.5 ft) - or as high as you can reach.
Step 9: Let the rope run and the piece of wood will catch in the carabiner. Your food bag will be up high and away from the bears.
Lowering the bear bag: Pull on the rope and remove the 20 cm (7.5") piece of wood. You'll be able to retrieve your food bag.
Note: Choose a tree and a sturdy branch. With a little practice, you can bear-proof your food in 1-2 minutes. The hardest part is throwing the rock over the tree branch!
